I’m sure that everybody takes pride in the great job done by the crew and supporters of the Dover Lifeboat.

In case anybody is in any doubt, you are very welcome to visit Dover Lifeboat Station and to see the boat (City of London II) at her mooring. There’s a small gift shop there which is stuffed with RNLI gifts, and anything you buy will help to support a very worthy cause.

For may years Dover’s lifeboat crew was summoned by launching maroons and we were all aware of their every launch.

If I remember correctly:

• One maroon meant standby
• Two was a launch
• And three meant a Doctor was required

Of course nowadays it’s all done electronically and it’s much harder to know when they’ll be heading out on a rescue, but if you should manage to see her roar out of the harbour it’s a stirring site.
