Plain Speaking from Dover

Twitter and Readers are simply alternative ways of keeping up with the news from any website.

Twitter first, because it’s short and sweet:

  • Twitter allows you to ‘Follow’ anybody who posts messages to Twitter (Tweets).
  • Twitter restricts the Tweet length to just 140 characters.
  • People often include a link in their Tweet to further information on a website.
  • So, essentially, if you ‘Follow’ someone on Twitter you’ll see a short summary message of every update from them, and can then make a choice to clck any links provided and read further information if you wish.
  • Stephen Fry is one of the World’s most popular Twitterers with about 580,000 Followers.
  • To be able to Follow others you must first get your own Twitter account at Twitter.com. It is simple to do, you only need to provide an email address and invent a user name.

Now, let’s see if we can explain Feed Readers:

  • Websites that publish regular news and updates (like AboutDover) generate what is known as a ‘Feed’.
  • If you make use of a ‘Feed Reader’, you can subscribe to that Feed from any of your favourite websites and by simply using your Reader you can get all the news, from all of your favourite sites, on one web page.
  • We would recommend that you make use of Google Reader.
  • Simply go to the Google Reader page and then click on the Create Account button.
  • As with Twitter they will simply ask for your email address.
  • This video might help if you need further explanation.
  • You can simply click here to create your Google Reader account and subscribe to our AboutDover feed.
